Dr. Bruce Alan Beutler:
2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Recipient

Dr. Bruce A. Beutler, an internationally recognized leader in immunology, won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of mammalian receptor proteins that recognize disease-causing agents and activate innate immunity, the first step in the body’s immune response to invasion by bacteria and other pathogens. He shared half of the 2011 prize with Dr. Jules A. Hoffmann for their discoveries in innate immunity activation with the other half of the prize being awarded to the late Dr. Ralph M. Steinman for his discovery of dendritic cell function in adaptive immunity. Dr. Beutler’s ground-breaking discovery of these novel receptor proteins triggered an explosion of research in innate immunity, opening up new avenues for the development of therapeutic and preventive measures against infections, cancer, and inflammatory diseases.
